YouTube app update brings fresh UI to Froyo and Gingerbread, offers more features

Fresh from announcing that more TV shows and movies from Fox are coming to YouTube, Google is giving the video sharing app a makeover in the UI department, one that will be welcomed by folks who still have devices running Android 2.2 and 2.3, as well as other improvements.

The latest YouTube app update brings the user interface on Froyo and Gingerbread devices on par with newer versions of the OS. If for some reason you can’t make the jump to Honeycomb and above, you’ll see that the starting page sports an ICS-like theme.

Meanwhile, others will notice that the tabbed layout on the page has been changed. Instead of swiping to go to “Related Videos” and “Comments”, you simply have to scroll down and click on the header. Some may prefer the old ways as it seems to be more intuitive, but it’s only a matter of time before you get used to it.

The new YouTube app also comes with a new Watch experience, the ability to add videos to your YouTube queue (a la the Watch Later feature on the web version), and more channels to choose from on the Channel Store.
