Xiaomi CEO confirms a new Mi Mix phone is on its way but will take time

Xiaomi co-founder and CEO Lei Jun has finally opened up about some pertinent questions regarding the company’s future plans. Ahead of his commemorative speech marking Xiaomi’s 10th anniversary, Jun took to Weibo to answer the following three fan questions related to Xiaomi’s Mi Mix series and its proprietary chipsets:

  • Is there a Mi Mix this time?
  • When will the Mi Mix Alpha be mass-produced?
  • Is Xiaomi still making Surge chipsets?

    A new Mi Mix on its way?

    Addressing the first question, Jun confirmed that Xiaomi is indeed working on a new Mi Mix phone. He said that the series represents breakthroughs in cutting-edge technology and that fans have high expectations for it. However, he also said that the next generation of Mi Mix will take some time, so don’t expect to see a new phone in the series anytime soon.

    For what it’s worth, a previous report also suggested that Xiaomi is going full steam ahead with the Mi Mix 4. The company’s newly appointed VP and Chief Marketing Officer, Yang Zhe, will apparently run the show on the development and launch of the phone. Rumors suggest that it will feature a 120Hz curved display and 40W charging. The phone is also believed to arrive in two models, including a Pro version.

    What happened to the Mi Mix Alpha?

    Besides confirming a new Mi Mix model, Jun also put to rest all speculation about the Mi Mix Alpha. He said that the Alpha was a research project which has successfully concluded. He also admitted that it was too difficult to mass-produce the ambitious 360-degree display phone, so the company abandoned the idea and decided to focus on the next-gen Mi Mix phone instead.

    Is Xiaomi still working on Surge chipsets?

    Lastly, Jun answered a question about the future of the company’s proprietary Surge chipsets. Xiaomi unveiled its first in-house chipset — the Surge S1 — in 2017. The company never released a successor to the SoC, and so it seemingly abandoned the idea. However, Jun has now confirmed that Xiaomi hasn’t given up on its chipset plans. He said that the company did face huge difficulties after unveiling the Surge S1, but the project is still alive. He also assured fans that the company will share new developments when it has something to announce.
