We already know that Disney Plus will have a ton of Marvel Cinematic Universe-based TV shows. But what about rival HBO Max? That means the two streaming services will soon duke it out in a bid to capture the already huge superhero TV audience. In fact, it already feels a bit like the old Marvel and DC comic book rivalry.

Upcoming DC Comics shows and movies on HBO Max

Editor’s note: We will be updating this list of the upcoming DC Comics shows and movies as they are announced

Doom Patrol (fourth season – 2022)

Warner Bros

After debuting its first season on DC Universe, and its second on both DC Universe and HBO Max, Doom Patrol returned for its third outing in 2021, as an HBO Max exclusive. That season was so successful, it’s already been renewed for a fourth season. Centered on the DC superhero team, the series is based largely on the comics run written by Grant Morrison. This team of misfits with superpowers includes Robotman, who has a human brain inside a metal body. There’s also Crazy Jane, who has 64 personalities, each with its own superpower. You can go ahead and watch the first three seasons now on HBO Max. It’s great stuff!

Harley Quinn (third season 2022)

One of the best DC Comics shows on HBO Max is an animated series. Harley Quinn is a very R-rated show featuring the Joker’s popular sidekick. However, in this series, Harley, voiced by Kaley Cuoco, decides to embark on her own journey. As a result, she butts heads with several major and minor DC superheroes and villains. It’s hilarious stuff but not suitable for the kids. After debuting on DC Universe, you can now watch the first two seasons on HBO Max. The third season will make its way onto the service in 2022.

Titans (fourth season – 2022)

Titans, the superhero team composed of mostly younger heroes and led by Dick Grayson/Nightwing, launched its third season as an HBO Max exclusive earlier in 2021. HBO Max has already confirmed that the show will return for its fourth season sometime in 2022. Meanwhile, you can watch the first three seasons now on the streaming service.

Green Lantern (TBD)

If you can forget that awful 2011 live-action Green Lantern movie, you might want to get excited for this upcoming DC Comics show on HBO Max. Green Lantern is the “space cop” of the DC Universe. He protects the Earth, and the universe, from cosmic threats. He does this with his green-charged Power Ring, which can create almost any shape or object he desires. Not much is known about this adaptation, but its produced by Greg Berlanti, who is in charge of the many successful DC Comics shows on the CW network. The showrunner will be Seth Grahame-Smith, best known for his genre-blending novels Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, Abraham Lincoln, and Vampire Hunter.

The series will actually feature several people who have held the Green Lantern name, including the original, Alan Scott, and more recent members Guy Gardner, Jessica Cruz, and Simon Baz. Finn Wittrock has already been cast as the highly volatile Guy Gardner.

Untitled The Batman prequel – TBA

Warner Bros

Director Matt Reeves is making The Batman, the latest live-action feature film centering on the Caped Crusader. It’s due in theaters in 2022. However, he’s also developing a prequel series for HBO Max. Originally the show was supposed to take place during the first year of The Batman’s appearances in Gotham City. It would have focused on its police department, as its officers would have had to deal with the masked vigilante, among other things.

However, it appears the concept for the show has been changed. Reeves revealed in an interview with the Toronto Sun that the show will now focus on Arkham Asylum, the criminal mental institution that’s been a major part of the Batman comics, and was also featured in The Batman movie. A release date for the show has yet to be announced.

Peacemaker Season 2 (TBD)

Peacemaker launched its first season in early 2022. It was based on the 2021 movie The Suicide Squad. Both the movie and the show feature John Cena playing the role of the skilled but highly unstable warrior Peacemaker. The first season was highly successful, both with viewers and critics, and HBO Max confirmed a second season is in the works. James Gunn, who wrote all of the episodes for the first season and directed the majority of them, will be back to write and direct all the episodes for the second season. A release date has yet to be announced.

Madame X (TBD)

Madame Zanadu is a magic-based character that was first introduced in the 1970s in the DC Comics universe. In June 2021, The Hollywood Reporter stated that J.J. Abrams is helping produce a Madame X series for HBO Max that features a version of the character. The series will be written and executive produced by Angela Robinson, who previously wrote Professor Marston & the Wonder Women, a movie about the real-life creation of the Wonder Woman character. A release date has yet to be announced.

Justice League Dark (TBD)

J.J. Abrams and his Bad Robot team are in charge of developing this show for HBO Max. It’s based on the Justice League spin-off comic, featuring a team that battles more supernatural foes. The team has included characters like John Constantine, Deadman, Zatanna, Swamp Thing, and even Wonder Woman in the comics. There’s no word on which of these characters might appear on the show. A release date has yet to be announced.

Constantine (TBD)

Warner Bros

Variety reports that J.J. Abrams and his Bad Robot team are also developing a solo John Constantine series. The story claims that the series will focus on a younger version of the disheveled Brit who fights against supernatural foes. It could link up to the Justice League Dark series.

Keanu Reeves played Constantine in the 2005 movie of the same name. Matt Ryan also portrayed a version of the character in his own short-lived CW series Constantine and as a regular on DC’s Legends of Tomorrow. A release date for the new series has yet to be announced.

Pennyworth (third season) (2022)

Pennyworth was a show that first debuted on the Epix cable network. However, its first two seasons are now available HBO. Furthermore, the third season of the show will become an HBO Max exclusive, also in 2022. As with previous seasons, it will show the adventures of a young Alfred Pennyworth and Thomas Wayne, long before they become the butler and father to Bruce Wayne (a.k.a. Batman).

Strange Adventures (TBD)

This series is yet another one that’s executive produced by Greg Berlanti. Taking its name from one of DC Comics’ classic Silver Age titles, Strange Adventures will be an anthology series featuring a wide range of DC Comics characters. Not much else is known about this show at the moment. A release date has yet to be announced.

Batgirl (2022)

Warner Bros

This project will actually be released as an HBO Max exclusive movie. Leslie Grace, who is currently starring in the musical movie adaptation In The Heights, will play the title role of Batgirl, a.k.a, Barbara Gordon. Details on the movie’s plot have not been confirmed. However, Deadline reports that Michael Keaton is set to play Batman again in the new Batgirl movie. It will be directed by the duo of Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, who previously directed Bad Boys For Life.

Val Zod Superman (TBD)

Michael B. Jordan, who has had previous experiences with superhero movies (Chronicle, Fantastic Four, and Black Panther), is reportedly producing a limited series on HBO Max based on this alternative universe version of Superman. In the comics, Val-Zod is actually the Superman from Earth-2, a black Kryptonian who takes over from Kal-El as that Earth’s Superman. It’s currently unknown if Jordan will actually portray Val-Zod in the series. A release date has yet to be announced.

Batman: Caped Crusader (2022)

Warner Bros

Many Batman fans consider the 1990’s TV show Batman: The Animated Series to be the best incarnation of that character. Now HBO Max will be the home to an all-new animated series. Batman; Caped Crusader, will be produced by Bruce Timm, one of the co-creators of the original Batman: The Animated Series. Based on the sole artwork released for the show, it looks like Batman may look much like his original 1930s comics incarnation. More details about the series have yet to be announced.

My Adventures With Superman (2022)

Warner Bros

Superman will also get his own HBO Max animated series, but this show will be different. For one thing, this series looks like it will have a Japanese anime art style. The show will focus on 20-something versions of Superman/Clark Kent (voiced by The Boys’ Jack Quaid), along with Lois Lane and Jimmy Olsen. All three characters are supposed to be growing and learning more about themselves, even as they investigate stories for The Daily Planet and fight off bad guys in Superman’s case. A release date has yet to be announced.

Batwheels (2022)

This upcoming DC Comics show on HBO Max is just for the kids, and we mean preschoolers. Batwheels is an animated series, co-produced by Cartoon Network, that will show the vehicles of the DC Universe, particularly the Batmobile, as living things.

Untitled Penguin spin-off of The Batman (TBD)

Warner Bros

Yes, there’s another HBO Max spin-off from The Batman in the works. Deadline reports that Colin Farrell will reprise his Penguin role in that upcoming movie in this series, which will focus on his rise to power in the Gotham City crime world. A release date has yet to be announced.

That’s our look at the current list of upcoming DC Comics shows and movies on HBO Max. We will update this post when there is more news about these series.
