The best action movies on Amazon Prime Video

Editor’s note: We will update this list regularly as action movies leave Amazon Prime Video and others are introduced.

The Tomorrow War (2021)

Amazon Prime Video

IMDb rating: 6.6
Starring: Chris Pratt, Yvonne Strahovski

This movie was slated to hit theaters in 2021, but instead became an Amazon Prime Video exclusive. As it happens, it’s also one of the best Amazon Prime Video action movies you can watch. Humans from several decades in the future travel to our present. Their goal is to recruit people in our time to fight an alien invasion that’s coming in the future. Look for lots of big action set pieces, including one on a massive oil rig with thousands of big teeth aliens going up against the human defense. It’s pretty darn good.

Jolt (2021)

IMDb rating: 5.6
Starring: Kate Beckinsale, Jai Courtney

Kate Beckinsale has played her share of action roles in movies over the years. This 2021 Amazon Prime Video exclusive may be her most “out there” movie ever. She plays a bouncer with a very bad anger issue. Indeed, she can kill people if she gets too mad. She seeks some help and finds Stanley Tucci’s character, who creates a “suit” of electrodes for her to wear that she can activate.

The jolt of electricity is supposed to stop her from getting too mad. It seems to work, until unknown assassins blow up her apartment. Now the suit is off and she can embrace her angry side to take out the bad guys. This is undoubtedly one of the wildest action movies on Amazon Prime Video you can currently watch.

The Terminator (1984)

IMDb rating: 8.1
Starring: Arnold Schwarzenegger, Linda Hamilton

This low-budget 1984 action movie on Amazon Prime Video is a true film classic, with Arnold Schwarzenegger playing the title role. He’s a cyborg sent from a future where an evil AI has tried and failed to kill off all of humanity. The Terminator’s mission is to kill the mother of the human resistance leader in 1984 before she can give birth. It’s a little dated in places, but James Cameron’s direction of the action and script are still excellent.

Lionheart (1990)

IMDb rating: 6.2
Starring: Jean-Claude Van Damme, Harrison Page

If you love martial arts action movies and low-budget 1990s action films, one of the best is on Amazon Prime Video. Jean-Claude Van Damme plays a French Foreign Legion soldier who has to deal with his brother getting murdered. He wants to help support his sister-in-law and her daughter, so JCVD heads to Los Angeles and fights in illegal matches to get some money for the family. It’s one of the best you can watch on Amazon Prime.

My Spy (2020)

Amazon Prime Video

IMDb rating: 6.3
Starring: Dave Bautista, Chloe Coleman

While good action movies almost always have some humorous bits, it’s much harder to make a true action-comedy. My Spy, an Amazon Prime exclusive, made it look easy. This 2020 movie stars Dave Bautista as a CIA operative ordered to follow an American family. Unfortunately for him, the family’s 9-year-old daughter has discovered him, and now she wants to be a spy.

The movie was well-received enough that a sequel is in the works. It has to be one of the best action movies Amazon Prime offers.

The Protege (2021)

IMDb rating: 6.1
Starring: Maggie Q, Michael Keaton

Maggie Q plays a super-skilled assassin in this 2021 action picture. She’s good at her job and is well trained by her mentor, played by Samuel L. Jackson. However, when Jackson gets assassinated, Maggie Q’s character has to go after his killers and the folks that ordered the hit. That includes a character played to the hilt by Michael Keaton. It’s a fun movie with some solid action and fight sequences.

Wrath of Man (2021)

IMDb rating: 7.1
Starring: Jason Statham, Jeffrey Donovan

Jason Statham reteams with director Guy Ritchie (Snatch) for this crime-action movie. Statham plays a newly recruited armored car guard in Los Angeles who seems to be very good at his job. However, he has some hidden motivations for applying for this particular line of work. This has some interesting twists and turns that will keep you guessing.

Skyfall (2012)

IMDb rating: 7.8
Starring: Daniel Craig, Javier Bardem

Daniel Craig stars in the best of his five James Bond movies in this film directed by Sam Mendez. After a mission that goes belly up, and Bond is shot and presumed dead, the film then jumps ahead and shows MI-6 under attack by an unknown foe. Bond then comes out from hiding and goes after this new threat, who has some very specific ties to his old spy organization.

Double Impact (1991)

Amazon Prime Video

IMDb rating: 5.6
Starring: Jean-Claude Van Damme

Jean-Claude Van Damme plays dual roles for the first time (but not the last) in this B-movie 1991 action classic. Separated when they were young, the twins are reunited when they go after the crime boss that killed their parents in Hong Kong. It’s a bit goofy, but Van Damme’s signature action moves were at the top of his game in this movie. Just sit down, watch, and enjoy the fun.

Highlander (1986)

IMDb rating: 7.1
Starring: Christopher Lambert, Sean Connery

One of the best action movies on Amazon Prime Video also spawned a huge franchise. Several sequels to the original 1986 movie were released afterward, along with a long-running syndicated TV series. The first movie is still the best, however. Christopher Lambert plays a Scottish warrior who is several hundred years old. He’s part of a subset of the human race that cannot die unless their head comes off their body. He has to battle other immortals to be the only one left standing.

There are some nice swordplay action sequences, and Sean Connery makes the most of his brief role as another immortal who teaches Lambert’s character how to defend himself.

World War Z (2013)

Daniella Kertesz is Segen (center left) and Brad Pitt is Gerry Lane (center right) in WORLD WAR Z, from Paramount Pictures and Skydance Productions in association with Hemisphere Media Capital and GK Films. WWZ-00645R

IMDb rating: 7.0
Starring: Brad Pitt, Peter Capaldi

This 2013 movie may be the biggest budgeted zombie movie ever made. It also takes us around the globe, from the US to Israel to the UK. Brad Pitt plays a former UN investigator who suddenly has to fight to keep his family alive when a sudden zombie virus goes completely out of control. He tries to find a cure for this virus before these fast infecting and fast-moving undead humans take over the Earth.

Without Remorse (2021)

Amazon Prime Video

IMDb rating: 5.7
Starring: Michael P Jordan, Jodie Turner-Smith

Here’s another 2021 Amazon Prime Video action movie exclusive. Based on the Tom Clancy thriller novel, Michael B Jordan is a Navy SEAL who joins his team to rescue a CIA operative from rogue Russian military forces. Unfortunately for him, the bad guys decide to kill his wife. Jordan goes after his wife’s killers, only to discover that there’s even more going on than meets the eye.

Unhinged (2020)

Amazon Prime Video

IMDb rating: 6.0
Starring: Russell Crowe, Caren Pistorius

Russell Crowe is almost a force of nature in this 2020 action thriller. He plays a man on the road who goes crazy when a woman uses her car horn and exchanges some harsh words with him. For the rest of the movie, Crowe becomes the worst nightmare of any motorist, a person so full of road rage that he will stop at nothing to kill the woman who dared to criticize him.

Taken (2009)

IMDb rating: 7.8
Starring: Liam Neeson, Maggie Grace

With this movie, Liam Neeson became a somewhat unlikely but effective action hero. He plays a former secret agent who is now serving as a bodyguard for a pop singer. However, when his daughter (Maggie Grace) gets kidnapped while on a trip to Paris, her dad goes all in to save her. This movie has some great action sequences and even some emotional scenes.

Con Air (1997)

IMDb rating: 6.9
Starring: Nicolas CageJohn Malkovich

Find your seats on this flight. Nicolas Cage plays a (wrongfully convicted) man who’s about to be set free to see his wife and daughter after seven years in prison. However, the flight he’s taking to return home is also filled with real criminals. Most of them, led by John Malkovich’s character, quickly take over the plane, and now it’s up to Cage to take them out so he can go back to his family.

Goldeneye (1995)

IMDb rating: 7.2
Starring: Pierce Brosnan, Sean Bean

Pierce Brosnan’s first movie as superspy James Bond was also his best. He managed to merge the toughness and sexiness of Sean Connery with the humor of Roger Moore. It helps that the script, about a former MI6 agent’s threat against the world, has some great action sequences.
