Sprint preparing to rollout Wi-Fi Calling feature

In the United States, the only major carrier that currently offers Wi-Fi calling directly is T-Mobile, but this could be changing soon enough. According to some newly leaked Sprint training materials, Sprint Wi-Fi Calling may be rolling out soon.

So what’s the purpose Wi-Fi calling? The most obvious benefit is for situations where you are in areas that have poor cellular reception, such as perhaps your office building, your basement or other locations that tend to block signals. Besides this benefit, Wi-Fi calling also won’t detract from your normal minutes and text limits. Of course this really isn’t a problem for most Sprint customers, due to unlimited call/text plans.

Now it’s important to note that the Sprint Wi-Fi Calling feature will not necessarily work with all existing devices. The leaked training materials mention that at least the Galaxy S4 Mini and Galaxy S4 Mega will support the feature with via software update, though we wouldn’t be surprised if even more of Sprint’s current Android handsets are supported.

Once Sprint rolls out the service, using it will be as simple as enabling the settings from Sprint’s website and ensuring that Android Location Services is turned on. The service will also require that you are in the United States, U.S. Virgin Islands or Puerto Rico.

So when can we expect this feature to rollout? That’s a bit less clear. The training materials don’t mention any exact dates, and while they certainly look official enough, there’s always the possibility that the materials are either fake or simply a program that is currently in testing with no plans for a major rollout.

In other words, until Sprint officially confirms its plans for Wi-Fi Calling, we wouldn’t get our hopes up.
