Sony Xperia Ion gets Android 4.4 KitKat, via unofficial CM11 ROM

Owners of the Sony Xperia Ion haven’t seen a lot of love recently, at least when it comes to OS upgrades. Not only did Sony essentially abandon the device after updating it to Android 4.1.2, the device hasn’t seen a lot of community support when it comes to Android 4.2 or 4.3 ROMs, either.

The good news is that the Sony Xperia Ion is now making a pretty big jump, getting its first taste of Android 4.4 KitKat — all thanks to the efforts of XDA member MrGezz and a developer named RaymanFX. The new KitKat ROM comes in the form of an unofficial CM11 build, and is said to be built upon work originally created by FXP for their CM10 builds.

The ROM is technically in the alpha stage of development, but it is actually said to be very stable with only a few documented issues. Most notably, the LED indicator doesn’t show up when charging and the battery percentage doesn’t show up properly in the status bar. Neither of these are exactly deal-breaking bugs, though.
