Samsung Galaxy Star and Galaxy Pocket Neo officially unveiled

Publish date: 2022-11-10

Samsung has been the number one Android manufacturer for almost a year now, capturing majority market share in most markets around the globe. While a lot of the company’s lead can be attributed to the success of its high-end devices, another important factor is Samsung’s continuing effort to cover the entire spectrum of the smartphone market. As such, today, Samsung unveiled two entry level Android smartphones, both running Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, called the Galaxy Star and the Galaxy Pocket Neo.

Both budget-friendly smartphones were first spotted at a Samsung forum in South Africa about two weeks back, but the company today officially unveiled the devices, including previously-unknown detailed information on the specifications and features of the phones, on the company website.

The Samsung Galaxy Star and the Galaxy Pocket Neo are very similar, with the only difference being the 1Ghz processor for the former, and 850 Mhz processor for the latter. All other specifications are the same, and include a 3-inch QVGA TFT LCD display, 512MB RAM, 4GB internal storage expandable via microSD up to 32GB, 2MP rear camera, 1,200 mAh battery, Android 4.1 Jelly Bean with Samsung TouchWiz UI, and dual-SIM support.

It’s great to see such entry-level smartphones with the (almost) latest Android iteration on-board, since similar low-cost devices usually launch with Android 4.0, or worse, Android 2.3 Gingerbread. Of course, considering the low-end specs, there’s no guarantee that these devices will be getting any firmware updates in the future, but JB is a good enough start.

Samsung didn’t release any information on the price or the target markets for these devices, but with these entry-level devices and the addition of dual-SIM capabilities, we’re looking at a potential release in emerging markets in Africa and Asia. If Samsung is hoping to compete successfully against similar offerings from local manufacturers, the price of the Galaxy Star and the Galaxy Pocket Neo should fall in $100 – $150 range.
