Samsung Galaxy Player 5.0 / Galaxy S Wi-Fi 5.0 YP-G70: Installing Entropy's Daily Driver (custom kernel) for overclock and ext4 support

The Samsung Galaxy Player 5.0 is making a lot of commotion these days in the developer community. One of the latest development hacks for Samsung’s portable media player is Entropy512’s Daily Driver kernel by XDA Developers member Entropy512.

Entropy’s Daily Driver kernel features a lot a lot of performance upgrades and contains a heavily modified version of ClockworkMod Recovery. Not only that, the said kernel also comes with an overclocking feature that allows you to push the boundaries of the Galaxy Player 5.0 up to the limits.

  • Download the TAR release of Entropy512’s custom kernel (DD_01142012.tar, 6.47 MB) from here and save it to your PC.
  • Download the latest flashable ZIP release of Entropy’s Daily Driver (DD_03052012.zip, 6.64 MB) from here and save it to your PC.  Copy the ZIP file to the root of your player’s internal SD card.
  • Download Odin3 (Odin3_v1.7.exe, 412.5 kB) from here and save it to your PC.
  • On your PC, run Odin3 by double-clicking the Odin3 v1.7.exe file.
  • Switch off your Galaxy Player 5.0.
  • Boot your player into Download Mode. You can do this by first connecting the USB cable to your PC. Hold down the Volume Down key on your Galaxy Player 5.0 as you connect the other end of the USB cable to the phone.
  • On your PC, Odin3 should display the word “Added!” on its message box on the bottom left. If not, make sure that the proper drivers are installed on your PC.
  • In Odin3, select the PDA tab then select the DD_01142012.tar file.
  • Important! Do not modify any other button except the one mentioned in this tutorial. Doing so may cause irreversible damage to your device.
  • Select the Start button in Odin to begin flashing Entropy’s Daily Driver kernel on your Galaxy Player 5.0.
  • Once the kernel is installed, your phone should automatically reboot itself. You should see a “Pass” message written on top of Odin3’s left-most box.
  • Disconnect your Galaxy Player 5.0 from your PC.
  • Switch off your player again.
  • Reboot the player into Recovery Mode by holding down both the Volume Up and Power buttons until the recovery menu appears.
  • From the recovery menu, select Install ZIP from SDcard > Choose ZIP from SDcard and select DD_03052012.zip.  Confirm that you want to flash this ZIP file.  Flashing shouldn’t take more than 2 to 5 minutes.
  • Return to main recovery menu, then select Reboot system now.
  • Congratulations! You have successfully flashed Entropy’s Daily Drivers kernel on your Samsung Galaxy Player 5.0.
