Samsung confirms Exynos Quad 4 on the Galaxy S3, 1.4GHz quad-core

Amidst all the rumors and speculations of how the Samsung Galaxy S3 would look like and what it would sport inside that still-mysterious body, there’s a breath of fresh air coming from Samsung itself regarding the processor in the next Galaxy. The Korean phone manufacturer today has confirmed that the Samsung Galaxy S3 will be powered by a 1.4GHz Exynos 4 Quad processor, most likely the quad-core Exynos 4412 that most have expected to see.

Samsung senior vice president of product strategy, Hankil Yoon, in a written statement, said that “Samsung’s next Galaxy device, which will be officially announced soon, offers uncompromised performance and ground breaking multi-tasking features, thanks to Exynos 4 Quad’s powerful performance and efficient energy management technology.”

Compared to the 45nm dual-core Exynos processor, the Exynos 4 Quad comes with a 32nm High-k Metal Gate (HKMG) design, with improved performance and reduced power consumption. Since Samsung keeps the form factor of the new SoC similar to the dual-core Exynos chip, phone manufacturers will be able to tap into the power of the quad-core processor immediately, without engaging in extensive re-designing operations.

The GPU that the Exynos 4 Quad is packing is still unconfirmed, but Anandtech believes that Samsung’s finest quad-core SoC will come with Mali400MP4, clocked at a higher speed. If you want to see the quad-core chip in action, check out the presentation video that Samsung has uploaded.

The official announcement made by Samsung seems to be consistent with yesterday’s report that stated that the Korean and European versions of the Samsung Galaxy S3 will be using a quad-core Exynos processor, while Samsung plans to follow HTC’s example of using a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor for the US version of the Galaxy S3.
