PSX4Droid 3.0 Out Now, Free From ZodTTD

The Android Market troubles of console-hacker ZodTTD hasn’t stopped him from publishing the latest and greatest version of his PlayStation emulator, the PSX4Droid. If you’ve been following his travails lately, you’ll know that Google last week suddenly pulled his emulator from the Market as well as froze his dev accounts. Rumor has it that this was due to the upcoming launch of the Xperia Play, a Sony Ericsson phone capable of playing PSOne games.

Oddly enough, emulators for other systems are still available in the Android Market. Apps such as Nesoid, SNESDROID and Gameboid continue to sell and surprisingly, even rival PS emulator FPse remains downloadable.

Despite this setback, ZodTTD is pushing through with version 3.0.0 of the PSX4Droid. In a recent post at his blog, he announced that PSX4Droid will be free and open-source, at least for this version. The current emulator has been rebuilt from the ground up (now based on PCSX-ReARMed for those curious) and promises to be faster, depending on the device running it. ZodTTD says that, “psx4droid 3.0.0 should have great compatibility, better performance.”

Unfortunately for those long-time users, all your previous save states are incompatible with the new version and you might have to start from scratch. Some users have also been reporting a variety of hiccups due to the new version. If you’re satisfied with the current version you are using, you might want to finish your games before upgrading and remember to turn off Quick Load in the settings. Or stick around and avoid the crashes.
