Philips Hue goes old school with Edison-style smart bulbs

Publish date: 2023-01-23

Philips Hue is launching several new products here at IFA 2019, including an impressive new Filament Collection that adds a little bit of old school charm into the mix.

Here’s everything new in the Philips Hue portfolio announced at the show!

Philips Hue Filament collection

Up to 16 million colors and the ability to control your entire lighting setup with just a phone is fantastic. But if you aren’t ready to switch to smart bulbs because you prefer the look of an old-school filament bulb, your wait is now over.

The new Philips Hue Filament collection looks exactly like an Edison-style bulb with its glowing inner coil. It’s still an LED bulb and comes with all the features you’d expect from a Hue smart bulb. You can turn the brightness up or down, set up and control a network of bulbs, and do a whole lot more using just your phone. At up to 550 lumens, these get plenty bright too.

The Philips Hue starts at €19.99 (~$22). The Filament collection goes on sale next week in Europe and will be available in the U.S. in October with a starting price of $24.99.

Hue Go portable smart lamp

The Hue Go smart lamp is an extremely convenient multi-colored lighting option that you can carry everywhere you go. The original version was far from perfect though, and Philips Hue aims to address a lot of these issues with the 2019 refresh.

The most important upgrade is the battery life. It makes a significant jump from just 3 hours to around 10 hours with the new model. Like the rest of its smart lights, the new Hue Go gets Bluetooth-compatibility as well. This lets you control it with a phone or with your voice using smart home assistants. Finally, the charging port is easier to reach and it gets brighter than the older version.

The upgraded Hue Go portable smart lamp will be available in Europe next week and will make its way over to the U.S. in November with a $79.99 price tag.

Philips Hue Smart Plug

The Philips Hue Smart Plug lets you add smarts to your existing table or floor lamp. Well, that may be overstating things a bit. What you can do though is turn the lamp on or off by using the app, your voice, or a smart accessory. Smart plugs are nothing new but apparently Philips wanted in on the market.

The Philips Hue Smart Plug is also launching in Europe next week, priced at €29.95 ($33). It will release in the U.S. in October with a price tag of $39.95.
