OnePlus offers explanation for lack of wireless charging on OnePlus 6

TL;DR

OnePlus has explained the reasoning behind why it didn’t include wireless charging on the OnePlus 6. Speaking to Business Insider, a OnePlus representative said: “We don’t really feel the need to add wireless charging. We’re not going to add a feature just for the sake of it.”

The new OnePlus flagship launched last week. Starting at $529, it’s the most expensive OnePlus device yet and comes with a brand new design and premium features. With wireless charging being a top-tier smartphone function found on Android flagships like the Galaxy S9, LG V30, and Nokia 8 Sirocco, some expected that the OnePlus 6 may also implement this. Alas, it wasn’t meant to be.

This isn’t the first time OnePlus has disappointed fans with the omission of a smartphone feature — its second major device, the OnePlus 2, notably lacked NFC capabilities. At the time, OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei said “very few people” were using the functionality.

OnePlus has also discussed the topic of wireless charging before. Last December, the company’s CEO Pete Lau offered two reasons why OnePlus hadn’t implemented it previously, both relating to the reliability and efficiency of wired charging.

This latest explanation may disappoint those who’ve been waiting for a OnePlus flagship that charges wirelessly, but at least OnePlus hasn’t tried to dodge the question; it didn’t feel wireless charging was a necessary feature — what’s wrong with that?
