Nvidia Shield 2 benchmark lists Tegra K1 SoC and 4GB RAM

We already knew that Nvidia was working on a prequel to its first handheld gaming device, and now a benchmark for a test model of the Shield 2 has appeared on AnTuTu.

As you may have already guessed, Nvidia will also be using the Shield 2 to showcase the power of its new Tegra K1 mobile SoC. If you are unfamiliar with the Tegra K1, it’s Nvidia’s latest mobile SoC which borrows its GPU architecture from Nvidia’s high-end desktop Kepler design. You can read more about it here.

The Nvidia Shield 2 looks set to arrive with the quad-core version of the Tegra K1, so no “super” dual-core Denver CPU from Nvidia yet, which is clocked up a notch further than expected to 2.5 GHz. There’s also 4GB of RAM in the device, although it’s quite usual for test and developer versions of gaming devices to ship with additional memory, so this might change come the consumer release.

Furthermore, the Nvidia Shield 2 comes with a slightly higher resolution display than the original Shield, 1440 x 810 compared with the more standard 1280 x 720 HD display resolution. Other specs include Android 4.4.2 KitKat, a single 0.3 megapixel front facing camera, and 16GB worth of internal storage.

Android gaming is still suffering with growing pains, OUYA never really caught on and Nvidia is having some mixed success with the Shield’s game streaming capabilities. The future is looking a little brighter though, Amazon Fire TV offers up an inexpensive option to play your favourite Android games on your big screen, and the pixel consuming serious gamer can now look forward to the Nvidia Shield 2 too.
