New Migrate app aims to finally make switching custom ROMs easy as pie

TL;DR

If you’ve ever flashed a custom ROM on your Android device, you know how much of a pain it can be. Once you get used to the process it seems fairly simple, but to a newbie it can all seem very daunting.

A new app called Migrate is attempting to make it less of a headache to switch from one ROM to another on Android. It’s a lofty ambition — but it would be amazing if the Migrate app could pull it off.

Most users who flash a lot of ROMs use the app Titanium Backup to easily transition to the new ROM. Using Titanium Backup, a user can create backups of their apps, settings, media, etc., and then restore the backup once they’ve transitioned to the new ROM.

How To

However, Titanium Backup is a very clunky app (to put it mildly) with a UI which is not only out-of-date but also incredibly confusing for new users. Explaining how to use Titanium Backup is almost as tricky as explaining how to flash a ROM.

The Migrate app has a much cleaner and simpler UI and automates many of the tasks you have to do manually with Titanium Backup. Yes, there are fewer features within Migrate than there are in Titanium Backup (for now), but if all you want is to move your apps and data to a new install, Migrate should be all you need.

Migrate is still in beta, so some of its features will probably be clunky or simply not work. However, since Titanium Backup is likely not going to get a redesign anytime soon, Migrate is our next best hope for a simple, all-in-one way to take away at least one of the headaches of flashing new ROMs.
