The steady march towards 4K on mobile devices continues, with Japan Display Inc (JDI) announcing the availability of its first 10.1-inch tablet display of 4K resolution.

JDI is now shipping samples of the new IPS LCD panel, which features a resolution of 3,840 x 2,160, qualifying it for the 4K moniker. The display maker actually calls this resolution “4K2K” or “ultra-high resolution”. At 10.1-inch, the panel will feature an amazing 438ppi pixel density, putting it on par with current generation smartphones.

The new panel is an evolution of the 12.2-inch 4K module that JDI introduced back in September, and is made using the low temperature polysilicon process (LTPS) that brings lower power consumption and a smaller thickness. According to JDI, the new panel consumes the same power as a less dense 2,560 x 1,600 panel built with amorphous silicon technology. More specifically, the 10.1-inch 4K panel will draw a total of 2180mW, with the backlight taken into account.

The world’s top maker of LCD panels, Japan Display Inc combines the production capacities of Japanese giants Sony, Hitachi, and Toshiba.

Sony is likely to be one of the main clients for the new 10.1-inch 4K LCD display, which seems a perfect fit for the third generation of the Xperia Z Tablet series. The current generation, the Xperia Z2 Tablet, features a Full HD (1920 x 1080) display, a step behind the current state of the art, the Quad HD (2560 x 1440) panel on Samsung’s Galaxy TabPRO 10.1 tablet.

While the debate rages on around the merits of 4K resolution on small displays, manufacturers are pushing forward with their plans to breach the 4K barrier on mobile devices. On smartphones, the current high-end standard is Quad HD (also known as 2K); the Oppo Find 7 is the first widely available smartphone to feature a Quad HD display, with LG and Samsung rumored to release their own soon. However, the benefits of going Quad HD may not be apparent to users, as our quick comparison demonstrates.
