Moto Gamepad Mod now up for pre-order: available August 25

Publish date: 2022-02-04

Motorola introduced a slew of new Moto mods for its Moto Z devices at the beginning of June. These included the JBL SoundBoost 2 speaker, Moto TurboPower Pack battery mod, and some shell cases that enable wireless charging. Possibly the most interesting of the new mods was the Moto Gamepad, however, which clips onto phones to provide dedicated gaming controls.

The Moto Gamepad was also the last of the devices awaiting availability details, but now we’ve got our hands on them. The Moto Gamepad Moto Mod will be a Verizon-exclusive product, on sale August 25 for $79.99 — the same price as the TurboPower Pack and the SoundBoost 2.

Features

The device provides a pair of analog sticks, a D-pad, shoulder buttons, and ABXY buttons, making it comparable to the likes of the XBox 360 controller (though the right analog stick and buttons have swapped places). The Gamepad attaches to the Moto Z phones using their rear pins, meaning there’s no need to pair them via Bluetooth or use cables, and it also houses a 1035 mAh built-in battery, which can extend your battery life during a long gaming session (reportedly with up to eight hours of extra charge).

Though the device is a Verizon-exclusive, it’s not exclusive to Verizon customers. In other words, anybody will still be able to get their hands on this device, with free shipping, and you don’t even need to register for a MyVerizon account (you can check out as a guest.)

If you’re interested, you can pre-order the Gamepad Moto Mod at Verizon at the link. Just be aware that not every game in the Google Play Store has controller support — and it’s up to the games’ devs to implement, not Motorola.
