Moto G (2013) GPe receiving OTA Android 5.0.1 Lollipop now

For this 4.5-inch device, that was originally launched just over a year ago now, Motorola has decided to skip over the initial Android 5.0 release, pushing out the .1 upgraded version just a week after we learned about it. I wonder if this will be a trend, as the 2013 version of this Moto G GPe also skipped over Android 4.4.3 en-route to 4.4.4.

So far, the update has been excellent on the Moto G GPe. Perhaps we’ll look at the effects that Android 5.0.1 Lollipop will have on battery life another time, but we can say now that the performance on the device is not suffering. I was sure to run an AnTuTu benchmark just before installing the update, and another just after, how do you think it went?

That’s right, Android 5.0.1 Lollipop on the original Moto G GPe produces a much higher benchmark score than Android 4.4.4 KitKat before it. Jumping from 17,178 (average of 3 runs) to 18,694 (one run only) is no small feat.

If you needed a reminder, the 1st Gen. Moto G rocks a Snapdragon 400 SoC with 1GB of RAM. It came as a 3G device at first, an updated version came later with both 4G and a microSD slot. This phone has been one of the best bang for the buck Android devices ever produced, with the jury still out for many if the updated 2nd Gen. Moto G is indeed its superior.
