Mediatek unveils 64-bit octa-core SoC with support for 2k displays

MediaTek has quickly become one of the most important chip-makers in the Android world, largely due to its presence in a large number of devices aimed at emerging markets across the globe, including India and China. That said, it’s reputation for less-than-great SoCs and its unwillingness to release source code means that it isn’t exactly the brand of choice for most hardcore Android enthusiasts.

MediaTek is no Qualcomm when it comes to innovation either, but that doesn’t mean it won’t occasionally release something worth sitting up and taking notice of. The newly announced MT6795 just happens to be one of these innovations, packing eight 64-bit cores running at 2.2GHz, which is paired up with LPDDR3 memory running at 933MHz.

In addition to being a 64-bit chip with a true octa-core configuration, the MT6795 also supports 480 fps 1080p Full HD super-slow motion video, Cat. 4 LTE, and can even be paired with 2K displays. On paper, the MT6795 seems like a bit of a monster, though many times MediaTek chip’s sound better than they actually perform, so we’ll reserve judgment until the first devices ship with the chipset.

As for the kind of devices that will utilize the MT6795? Considering its higher-end nature, this SoC isn’t aimed at entry-level devices, and instead will make its way to mid-range handsets that Mediatek says will retail at $350 and up. What do you think of MediaTek’s latest SoC and the company’s direction in general? Will they ever be a true competitor for companies like Qualcomm and Nvidia?
