How to Turn Off Camera Shutter Sound on Android Phones

Publish date: 2023-05-16

If there is anything more awkward or irritating, it’s having people notice when you’re snapping a candid shot. One little annoying catch to using an Android phone’s camera is the little shutter sound it makes whenever you take a picture. It makes sneaking a spur-of-the-moment shot difficult, whether it’s at a meeting, a quiet room or even when you’re wandering the city. Fortunately, there are ways to turn this sound off so that you don’t have to be caught in the act.

The basic way is to switch your phone to Silent Mode. This process is simple and easy, but it comes with a few downsides. It’ll decrease the chances of alerting you when you have a new message or a call, especially when you’ve got your phone stuffed into your jacket or pants pocket or when you’re in a noisy area.

The second way is to download and install Uva Silent Widget Camera app. This Android application allows you to silence the camera’s shutter sound, without sacrificing your phone’s message and call alerts. If you’d like to give Uva Silent Widget Camera a try, you may download the app here.

Last but not the least is to install CyanogenMod 7.1.0. The ability to mute the camera shutter has been built into the ROM. This newest release updates your device’s OGG files and overwrites them to disable the sound by default. But, you won’t just be getting the option to mute your shutter sound–you’ll also get the many perks CyanogenMod 7.1.0 carries.

After you’ve installed CyanogenMod 7.1.0, you’ll need to reflash the ROM for every update. Once CyanogenMod has been installed on your phone, you’ll need to go through Settings > CyanogenMod Settings > Sound. Select Mute Camera Shutter. Once you hit OK, your camera will no longer make noise whenever you snap a picture.

Getting rid of that pesky shutter sound isn’t impossible, with three different ways of doing it for different needs. If you’d like to just briefly turn off the shutter sound, you can opt to switch your phone to Silent mode. If you’d rather install an app for it, then there’s Uva Silent Widget Camera. Or if you’d like to silence the shutter sound completely, and reap the benefits of a great ROM, there’s CyanogenMod 7.1.0.

Which one of these methods do you currently use?
