Google Photos automatically turns your photos into themed movies on demand

Publish date: 2022-04-03

TL;DR

Just in time for Valentine’s Day, Google Photos automatically takes your photos and groups them together into themed movies. This can be done on the mobile app and the web.

Do not expect much in the way of machine learning, however. You pick the people or animals who should star in the movies and Google Photos picks out the best images and videos. The content is then put together with appropriate music in the background.

The result is a one- to two-minute movie that can be shared with friends and family.

Google timed the feature’s launch around Valentine’s Day, though that is one of nine available themes. Other options include movies about your cat or dog, your kids, a selfie movie, Mother’s and Father’s Day movies, and movies about someone who passed away. More movie themes will rollout as the year progresses.

Because you can pick who or what stars in your movies, the only difference between the nine themes, it seems, is the music they use. For example, Google created a “Meow Movie” for people that featured a song with too many “meow” words for my liking.

The feature is rolling out in most countries today for the Google Photos app and web client.

If you think videos are not personal enough, Google offers photo books based on the better shots you took. The books start at $10 each and will arrive in time for Valentine’s Day, assuming you pick priority shipping at checkout and live in the United States.
