Google Camera teardown reveals McFly mode: What to expect?

Google Camera is arguably one of Google’s greatest creations, bringing fantastic picture quality to its Pixel smartphones. We’ve previously seen the company add features like HDR+ and Night Sight to the app, but it looks like another addition is in the works.

According to a teardown of the Google Camera app (version 6.3) by 9to5Google, the Mountain View company is working on a so-called McFly Mode. Mentions of the mode are also accompanied by references to “rewind” functionality, so what does this mean?

The website suggests that we could in fact be looking at the ability to record clips that get played in reverse. So filming someone jumping into a pool in this mode could result in a video of them effectively leaping out of the pool. Another example could be filming a person popping a balloon, which results in a clip of a balloon being brought back to life.

McFly Mode certainly sounds like an interesting feature if this is how it pans out, but I also have to wonder why this feature couldn’t be enabled in Google Photos. After all, it sounds like this could be a case of playing the clip backwards at the touch of a button or generating a backwards-playing version for sharing.

Google Camera 6.3 is also holding another secret in the form of Selfie Tips, according to 9to5Google. This feature will apparently suggest that you hold your phone at a better angle, because “research shows that selfies are best taken from above, with the camera pointed downwards.”

The final surprise in the teardown is a “Pixel 4” mention, as well as references to “flame” and “coral.” The latter two references are said to be codenames for the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL.
