Gionee’s upcoming handset is crazy thin, just 5mm thick

Publish date: 2022-09-01

There was a point when it seemed like every OEM was engaged in a battle for the thinnest possible device, all in the attempts to create a device with solid hardware that didn’t weigh a ton or wasn’t too thick to fit comfortably in your pocket. Fast-forwarding to 2014, this has become less of an issue for OEMs and consumers and all the 2014 flagship devices from Samsung, HTC and LG range from 8.1mm to 9.4mm in size. One market where the thin-factor continues to be a big deal? China.

These days nearly all the devices attempting to claim the “thinnest phone” title are coming out of China or India. With that in mind, the TENAA has just certified a new mid-range device from the Chinese-based company Gionee that looks to be pushing the thickness battle to a whole new level, dubbed the Gionee GN9005.

According to TENAA, the device weighs in at just 94.6g and manages an extremely thin profile of 5mm. Full measurements for the device are 139.8 x 67.4 x 5.0mm, which nicely fit a 4.8-inch 720p AMOLED display. Other specs include a 1.2GHz quad-core CPU with 1GB RAM, an 8MP rear cam, 5MP front cam, 16GB storage, a 2050mAh battery, TD-LTE and Android 4.3 Jelly Bean.

Bottom-line, if the idea of a mid-ranger with a 5mm thick profile sounds up you’re alley, you’ll want to keep an eye out for the Gionee GN9005. For those wondering if it’ll ever launch outside of China, we’d say the odds are good. After all, many of Gionee’s handsets make it to major markets like the United States as re-branded handsets from companies like Blu.

What do you think, is the thickness of a smartphone an important consideration for you at this point?
