Galaxy S3, iPhone 4S, Lumia 900 – what annoys you the most in your smartphone?

No matter how cool your smartphone is, especially if it’s a top-of-the-line or flagship device from your favorite manufacturer, it’s bound to experience some issues that are generally observed during day-to-day usage. These issues may have been overlooked by the manufacturer during testing but they’ll certainly annoy various smartphone owners during regular usage.

In its smartphone report, FixYa has listed the most common issues that affect the smartphone experience for various devices including the Samsung Galaxy S3, the iPhone 4S, the Nokia Lumia 900, the HTC Titan II, the Samsung Galaxy Nexus and the BlackBerry Curve. What’s interesting to note is that while the publication tried to sample as many smartphones from various makers, running as many different mobile platforms, it turns out that we have two Android handsets in the comparison, both made by Samsung. And, for that matter, we also have two Windows Phone high-end devices in the same list.

Let’s look at what’s wrong with these smartphones, according to users!

Samsung Galaxy S3

Here are the most irritating issues with the handset:

• Microphone Malfunction – 50%
• Battery Life – 15%
• Device Gets Hot – 15%
• Internet Connection Issues – 10%
• Other – 10%

The publication notes that the most annoying “feature” of the Galaxy S3 is the microphone issue, which can be corrected with a firmware update, if available, or by restoring the handset to factory settings. As for the issue itself, even if you’re not experiencing it, you should be aware of it: it’s the inability of hearing the person on the other end of the line during a phone call.

While this study doesn’t mention it yet, we’re certainly interested to see whether foreseeable Jelly Bean update delays are going to become the number one problem of the Galaxy S3 in the future.

iPhone 4S

Launched in October 2011, the latest iPhone model comes with some specific issues:

• Battery – 45%
• Can’t Connect Wi-Fi – 20%
• Bluetooth Connection – 15%
• Siri Complaint – 10%
• Other

The most important iPhone 4S problem is battery life, which should have been corrected by an iOS update issued by Apple a few months ago. However, users apparently still complain about battery life and while there isn’t a new fixt available for them, they could turn off certain features, such as location services, Siri, push notification, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth when not in use. They could also resort to turning off automatic email fetching and turning down screen brightness to save battery juice.

Nokia Lumia 900

The top Windows Phone 7 handset out there is not flaw-free! Check out some of its issues:

• Tinted Purple Screen – 25%
• Camera Button – 20%
• Can’t Find Applications – 20%
• Battery Life – 20%
• Other – 15%

Unlike the Galaxy S3 and iPhone 4S that each have one main issue, the Lumia 900 apparently comes with various problems that shouldn’t be neglected.

The purple screen can be fixed by using an update from Nokia that’s supposed to address the issue, but the Camera Button problem will still annoy you especially if you don’t exit all apps running on the device before it goes into standby mode. As for the lack of apps issue, that’s a problem affecting the whole WP ecosystem, as Microsoft is still trailing behind Apple and Google when it comes to its smartphone app catalog.

HTC Titan II

The second high-end Window Phone handset listed by FixYa is made by HTC, and it has some problems of its own:

• Screen Resolution – 35%
• Can’t Find Applications – 20%
• Camera Quality – 15%
• Battery Life – 15%
• Other – 15%

The Titan II’s main issue is the screen resolution. While the device comes with a big 4.7-inch display, users are apparently annoyed by its screen resolution – 800 x 480 – which won’t let them take properly take advantage of the available screen real estate when it comes to watching videos or playing games. And, unfortunately, the problem is unfixable.

Samsung Galaxy Nexus

The third Nexus-branded smartphone and the second one made by Samsung has some personality issues too, and shares the Galaxy S3’s main problem, microphone malfunctions:

• Microphone Malfunction – 55%
• Battery Life – 20%
• Can’t Connect Wi-Fi – 10%
• General Usability – 10%
• Other – 5%

The microphone issue can be fixed either by doing a hard reset to factory settings or by updating the handset to Android 4.0.4 IMM76K (official update) or to AXIOM CMPLX 4.0.4 (custom ROM). Battery life improvements are also available provided that you’re ready to disable background app activity, cut down 4G LTE usage time and switch to Wi-Fi data usage instead, turn down the brightness of the display, disable Bluetooth, auto-syncing and location settings, and have the handset go to sleep as fast as possible when not in use.

BlackBerry Curve

The Curve is one of the most popular BlackBerry models out there, even though RIM is not doing that good as of late. But the device has some issues of its own:

• Random Reboots – 40%
• Software Errors – 20%
• Missing Applications – 20%
• Memory Card Error – 10%
• Other – 10%

A very annoying fix for the Curve is the random reboot. Users are complaining about them and it looks like there is a fix that could prevent it. The random reboots are apparently related to the memory card. Once you format it on your computer, the reboots will go away.
