Episode of 'The Tonight Show' filmed using only Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus

TL;DR

As part of a new deal with NBC, Samsung arranged to have an entire episode of “The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon” filmed with a Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus (via Variety). That episode will air this evening, starting at 11:35 PM ET.

Because of the abnormal filming strategy, today’s “The Tonight Show” won’t look like the average episode. Most of the action will take place on the streets of New York rather than in the studio. There won’t be an opening monologue and there won’t be the usual appearance of a celebrity guest who is promoting their latest project.

Instead, Fallon will start by telling the audience about the unique setup of the episode which, of course, will have him heavily emphasizing the video power of the Galaxy S10 Plus. Following this, there will be a series of pre-recorded activities involving Fallon and his house band The Roots.

Some example segments are Fallon and The Roots dining out, Fallon delivering food to NYC firefighters, Fallon singing with Conor McGregor at an Irish pub, and Fallon and The Roots performing an a capella version of “In The Still of the Night,” a portion of which you can see below:

Watching the video above, you can tell that the Galaxy S10 Plus footage looks great. However, you can also tell why the producers opted to shoot things away from the traditional studio as there’s no way smartphone video could look as good as traditional broadcast camera footage. Chances are good that if they opted to instead shoot a “normal” episode using several Galaxy S10 Plus smartphones, the audience would only notice how the footage doesn’t look as good as usual, which would be bad for Samsung.
