Best Toshiba laptops in 2019

Publish date: 2023-05-22

Finding the best Toshiba laptops isn’t as long and grueling a process as it is with other manufacturers. This is partly due to Toshiba’s reorganization, as it exited the consumer laptop market in the United States in 2016, and then sold its personal PC business to Sharp in 2018. Now Toshiba solely focuses on its two business laptop brands: Portégé and Tecra.

With the mainstream portfolio eliminated, what’s left is the company’s business products. Toshiba’s current branding isn’t exactly clear on the surface either, but a little digging shows the Portégé umbrella covering thin-and-light solutions with 12.5- and 13.3-inch screens. The Tecra brand, on the other hand, covers mainstream clamshell designs between 13.3 and 15.6 inches. Digging a little deeper, specific series letters – like the A30 and X30 – seemingly highlight specific form factors: “X” for ultra-thins, 2-in-1s, and detachables; “A” for traditional designs; and “C” for budget. Meanwhile, the numbers represent sizes: “50” for 15.6 inches, “40” for 14 inches, and so on.

Unfortunately, our list of the best Toshiba laptops isn’t very long. We break everything down into specific form factors and list our favorites along with similar products.

Measuring 0.62 inches thin and weighing 2.31 pounds, the Portégé X30 provides a 13.3-inch display with optional 10-point touch input and a 1,366 x 768 or 1,920 x 1,080 resolution. All models rely on integrated graphics and do not offer discrete GPU options.

The specifications show this ultra-thin laptop ships with 8GB or 16GB of system memory but support 32GB using DDR4 sticks at 2,133MHz or 2,400MHz. Storage consists of a SATA- or PCIe-based SSD from 128GB to 1TB in capacity, depending on the configuration. This laptop does not include a DVD burner option.

Toshiba’s only 2-in-1 for business sports a 12.5-inch screen with a 1,920 x 1,080 resolution and 10-point touch input. Weighing 2.42 pounds and measuring a mere 0.60 inches thick, this device relies on a 360-degree hinge enabling laptop, tent, stand, and tablet modes. Plus, Toshiba throws in an extra mode just to be different: Tabletop mode for laying the device completely flat on a surface for everyone to see and collaborate.

Under the hood, you’ll see one of eight processor options ranging from the Core i5-7200U to the current Core i7-8650U along with integrated graphics. Memory ranges from 4GB to 16GB while storage ranges from 128GB to 1TB on a SATA- or PCIe-based SSD, depending on the configuration.

Toshiba’s single detachable PC is super-thin in tablet mode, measuring just 0.35 inches thick. With the included keyboard dock attached, the overall device measures 0.87 inches thick and weighs 3.33 pounds. It has a 13.3-inch screen with a 1,920 x 1,080 resolution and 10-point touch input.

With this model, the processor options aren’t quite so extensive, offering the Core i5-8350U or Core i7-8650U chip. Memory ships in 8GB and 16GB capacities, while storage relies on a SATA- or PCIe-based SSD with a capacity ranging from 128GB to 1TB.

The starting price of Toshiba’s Portégé X30T is $1,549.99.

4. Traditional power: Toshiba Tecra X50

The largest option in our list of the best Toshiba laptops, with a full 15.6-inch display. Despite being one of the largest laptops in this list, the device measures 0.69 inches in thickness and weighs 3.13 pounds. There’s still no room for a DVD burner or discrete graphics. The Tecra X50’s screen has a 1,920 x 1,080 resolution, and you can opt for a touchscreen. It’s also backed by a large selection of processor choices spanning the Core i5-8265U to the Core i7-8665U vPro processor.

On the memory front, Toshiba provides four options between 4GB and 32GB DDR4 sticks. Meanwhile, storage includes one of five devices: 256GB to 512GB on an SSD, 256GB to 1TB on PCIe units. Finally, the port complement consists of a microSD card reader, a USB 3.0 port, three USB 3.1 Type-C ports, and an HDMI port. The Tecra X50 has a starting price of $1,544.99 on Toshiba’s website.

5. Budget: Toshiba Tecra C50

This Tecra C50 budget laptop isn’t quite as feature-rich. Specifications show the 15.6-inch screen remains locked to a 1,366 x 768 resolution. There are only four processor options as well, ranging from the Core Celeron-3865U to the Core i5-8250U.

Two memory slots support up to 16GB of RAM, while storage is limited to hard drives with a 500GB to 1TB capacity, or an SSD ranging from 128GB to 256GB.
