Apple news: iPhone 120Hz rumors, fight with Facebook

This week in Apple news, we heard some solid-sounding rumors related to the 2021 crop of premium iPhones. Apparently, they could come with specialized OLED panels that would enable them to have 120Hz refresh rates. If so, it would be a long time coming for an iPhone to pass by the 60Hz mark.

In other Apple news, we heard about a supposed update to Apple TV hardware, new AirPods, Facebook throwing some significant shade at Apple, and Google Stadia finally landing on iOS.

• iPhone 13 Pro models could finally see the debut of 120Hz refresh rates: According to The Elec, Apple is working on using OLED displays that are capable of 120Hz refresh rates. Theoretically, these displays would ship in at least the Pro models of 2021’s flagship iPhones (presumably, the iPhone 13). It’s early days yet, but an iPhone with a higher refresh rate would be very long overdue by then, so this seems completely plausible.
• Apple TV update could finally land in 2021: Another long-overdue update within the Apple hardware lineup is the years-old Apple TV set-top box. With Apple TV Plus a major focus now, it’s strange that Apple doesn’t have a new, high-end option for streaming. It’s also strange there’s no Apple TV Stick or another lower-end model. According to Nikkei Asia Review, this could finally be rectified in 2021, as there appears to be at least one Apple TV hardware product in the pipeline.
• Chromecast with Google TV gets Apple TV Plus: Speaking of Apple TV Plus, the app connected to that service will soon be available on the new Chromecast with Google TV. This is notable because the app is not available on Android phones or tablets yet. It’s also notable since it makes the new Chromecast the most well-rounded streamer available with access to pretty much every major service the market offers.
• New AirPods could be a confusing mix of vanilla and Pro: Rumors suggest (via The Elec) that Apple could have a third-gen pair of AirPods on the docket for H1 2021. Interestingly, these AirPods could look a lot like AirPods Pro but lack the star feature of the Pro models, namely active noise-canceling. The price is rumored to be around $200.
• Facebook takes off its glove and slaps Apple’s face: Earlier this week, social networking giant Facebook took out full-page ads in multiple major newspapers. The ads call out Apple’s new limitations on personalized advertisement delivery for the sake of consumer privacy. Facebook presents this as being anti-small business, citing some figures that suggest small business owners survive mostly on personalized ad targeting.
• Google Stadia is now accessible on iPhones/iPads through Safari: Although Apple’s policies related to its App Store prevent an official Google Stadia rollout on iPhones and iPads, that doesn’t mean people can’t use it. A new web app related to the service works through the Safari web browser on both iOS and iPad OS devices. Now, Apple fans can stream major AAA gaming titles wherever they go.
